Are you a Professional? How you look, act, talk and perform at work may play a vital role in how your employer effectively utilizes your skills and talents. For many veterinary technicians who love their job, the daily challenge becomes how to be utilized to the fullest. The purpose this course is to provide you with the necessary tools in order to work with your employer to demonstrate how effective use of your skills will positively affect the bottom line of the practice/clinic.

This course will consist of five (5) ninety minute real time sessions; library materials supplementing the required and recommended text; multiple choice quizzes (after each real time session) designed to enhance course effectiveness and material retention; a cumulative final online; and interactive message board discussions.

This course is designed for all veterinary technicians and veterinary technician students wishing to have a better overall understanding of how they can advance their careers, promote themselves and benefit their practice and themselves by effective utilization.

Course Outline:

Week #1- Professionalism
In this section we will discuss the elements of success and what constitutes a professional. Learn how to compare costs vs. service in order to make yourself more marketable. Class will participate in confidence building exercises and analysis of personal image.

Week #2- Ethics and the Veterinary Technician
Learn about the three classifications of ethics Societal, Personal and Professional. Students will be able to explain how ethical issues in all three of the classification areas affect their work in practice as well as dictate how veterinary medicine is practiced. Emphasis will be made on the Veterinary Technician's Code of Ethics recognized by NAVTA. Exercises in this section will help teach the veterinary technician how to make responsible ethical decisions within the profession.

Week #3- The Veterinary Health Care Team
Veterinary technicians will be shown the differences between the various employment positions available in veterinary practice. Each person will gain knowledge of responsibilities, duties and skills necessary to perform each. Teamwork and team building exercised will help the student strengthen coworker, peer relationships. Emphasis will be made on veterinary technician specialties and professional development beyond the average technician.

Week #4- Evaluating your practice
In this module we will be using the NAVTA Utilization Workbook. NAVTA gathered the data that you will see in the utilization workbook through a survey of NAVTA members (graduate or credentialed veterinary technicians) living in the United States and working in small or mixed animal practice. The questionnaire was designed to collect information about the distribution of tasks commonly performed in the veterinary hospital. All tasks on the questionnaire were appropriate for veterinary technicians to perform.

Week #5- Effective Utilization
In this final module we will take a look at the results from the evaluation each person performed on their individual practice in the previous week. Now that we have determined how much money the practice is spending and also how much the technician is or is not being utilized we will create and establish a plan. Discussion in this lesson will include comparison of each practice with others within the course. How does each differ? How are they similar? What are the common problems we are facing and how do we address them?

Library materials will be made available prior to the topic week so participants will have plenty of time to prepare for the real time sessions and discussion. Due to the amount of material to be covered, it is highly recommended the student comes to class having reviewed the handouts for that week, reviewed the previous week's homework and study guide, utilized the message boards for the course, and is prepared to interact during the real time session.

Message board discussions regarding the topic presented will begin on the day the course opens and continue for one week following the last real time session. These discussions will be held in the VSPN CE course area.

This course has also been submitted for approval for continual education units toward CVPM requirements by the VHMA.
COURSE WITHDRAWAL AND REFUND POLICY: Withdrawal prior to the listed start date of a course entitles the registrant to a complete refund or a credit toward a future VIN CE course, whichever is preferred. Withdrawal within 1 week after the listed start date (i.e. including no more than one real-time session) entitles the registrant to a credit toward any future VIN CE course. (Does not apply to courses with only one real-time session.) After the first real-time session, a registrant may withdraw due to special circumstances and receive prorated credit towards a future VIN course. These requests will be handled on an individual basis. The amount of the prorated credit will be determined based on 65% of the time remaining in the course at the time of withdrawal.
