Course Information:
This course is designed to review wounds in dogs and cats from the initial presentation through to wound closure. During this course, participants will learn about various types of wounds that are commonly encountered, initial wound management strategies, updates on new wound products that are available, and bandaging techniques. Following this, participants will learn about wound closure techniques, including techniques used to relieve tension and other advanced surgical closure techniques such as local/subdermal plexus flaps, axial pattern flaps, and skin grafts.


Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • describe different types of wounds.
  • manage a wound from the initial wounding stage through to development of granulation tissue.
  • bandage various wounds, including wounds in difficult to bandage locations.
  • describe different wound products on the market and when and how they should be used.
  • use various tension relieving techniques to close wounds.
  • use local/subdermal plexus flaps to close difficult wounds.
  • describe axial pattern flaps and skin grafts that may be used to close wounds.


Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians interested in wound management and closure techniques for dogs and cats.
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 4 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-1110024)

Week 1 (Real Time Session March 20, 2024): Initial Wound Management, Wound Products, and Bandaging

Participants will learn about various types of wounds that are commonly encountered, initial wound management strategies, updates on new wound products that are available, and bandaging techniques.

Week 2 (Real Time Session March 27, 2024): Tension Relieving Techniques and Advanced Surgical Closure Techniques
Presenter: Mandy L. Wallace, DVM, MS, DACVS-SA
Participants will learn about wound closure techniques, including techniques used to relieve tension and other advanced surgical closure techniques such as local/subdermal plexus flaps, axial pattern flaps, and skin grafts.


Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course. To learn more about the requirements for earning a CE certificate, please refer to Receiving Your CE Credit and Course Completion Certificate.

Course Materials: Course materials will be available in the course library prior to each Real Time Session.
