Course Information:
Extracapsular stabilization is one of the most common surgeries performed for Cranial Cruciate Ligament (CrCL) disease in general practice. Although straightforward in principle, there are many pitfalls of the procedure and patient selection that can affect the outcome. This session highlights key points in patient selection, pre-op stifle radiographic screening, and execution of the surgery to optimize success.


Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • discuss with clients the most important pre-operative considerations for ExCap surgery.
  • determine key limitations of the procedure to make the best recommendation for each individual patient.
  • gain practical insight into common technical pitfalls to optimize surgical outcome.


Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians interested in Excap Surgery for CrCL disease.
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 1.5 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-1117868)

Week 1 (Real Time Session April 7, 2024): Why Did My Excap Surgery Fail? Getting the Best Results
In this session, we will discuss:
  • Pre-op considerations
    • Patient selection/exclusion criteria
    • Stifle radiographic screening
  • Surgical technique
    • Meniscal evaluation
    • Circumfabellar suture
    • Tibial anchor
    • Suture Tension
  • Technique limitations

    3. Veterinarians will only receive credit for those VSPN CE courses that specify in the Accreditation statement that the course is accredited for veterinarians.
