Course Information:
Femoral Head and Neck Ostectomy (FHO) is a popular surgical treatment option for trauma and dysplasia of the hip joint in our small animal patients. This session covers key points in case selection, as well as highlighting important surgical tips and common pitfalls. A more novel ventral versus traditional cranio-lateral approaches to FHO will also be discussed along with pros and cons of this approach. Timing of the surgery and post-operative management will also be discussed to optimize successful patient recovery.


Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • advise clients on ideal patient selection and timing for FHO surgery.
  • understand critical aspects and pitfalls of the FHO surgical technique.
  • gain insight into the novel ventral versus traditional craniolateral approach.
  • understand important post-operative considerations to optimize outcome post-surgery.


Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians interested in Femoral Head and Neck Ostectomy (FHO).
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 1.5 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-1117866)

    • What is the ideal patient and time to discuss surgery?
  • FHO Craniolateral approach
    • Key steps and common pitfalls
  • FHO Ventral approach
    • Key steps and limitations
    • Pros and Cons versus traditional approach
  • Post-operative considerations
