Course Information:
Getting Through the Day Module 3 is the third in a series of CE courses offered yearly FREE to new graduates, thanks to the VIN Foundation.

     

The VIN Foundation (https://vinfoundation.org) is a non-profit organization committed to helping you, and all new graduates, feel supported as you journey into and through our profession. Getting Through the Day is a VIN Foundation resource made possible through individual donations and grants. VIN membership is not required to access the VIN Foundation resources.

In this course different topics will be presented each week and the presentations will include highlights on pathophysiology, case presentation, differentials, diagnostic approach, treatment recommendations, and case examples where appropriate. Important non-technical skills will also be included.


Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • become a mentor in the practice.
  • better deal with moral dilemmas.
  • overcome common fears associated with practice.
  • navigate the ins and outs of compounding pharmacies.
  • write/call in prescriptions.
  • taper prednisone.
  • judiciously prescribe antibiotics.
  • monitor chronic medications.
  • understand common drug interactions.
  • recognize and address common respiratory diseases seen in everyday practice.
  • give differentials for common (and uncommon!) cases.
  • develop rational diagnostic and therapeutic treatment plans.
  • perform common soft tissue surgical procedures.
  • recognize and address common cardiovascular, endocrine, and neurologic presentations seen in everyday practice.

Level and Prerequisites: This basic VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians and new/recent grads looking for practical guidance as they venture forth into the unpredictable world of small animal general practice. It may also serve as a review for more experienced practitioners or as an introduction for those transitioning from other practice areas.
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 8 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-942843)

Week 1 (Real Time Session September 10, 2023): Fear and Empowerment (COVID)
Presenter: Susan P. Cohen, DSW
In this session you will learn how to become a mentor in the practice, how to better deal with moral dilemmas and learn to overcome fears associated with practice.

Week 2 (Real Time Session September 17, 2023): Obstacles in Daily Practice
Presenters: Amy Nichelason, DVM, DABVP
In this session you will learn how to navigate the ins and outs of compounding pharmacies, how to write/call in prescriptions. As well as how to taper prednisone, prescribe antibiotics, monitor chronic medications and understand common drug interactions.

Week 3 (Real Time Session September 24, 2023): Soft Tissue Surgery and Respiratory Disease
Presenters: Carl Darby, MA, VETMB
In this session you will learn how to recognize and address common respiratory diseases that you will see in everyday practice. How to develop rational diagnostic and therapeutic treatment plans and perform common soft tissue surgical procedures.

Week 4 (Real Time Session October 1, 2023): Common Cases
Presenters: Thomas Hansen, DVM, DABVP
In this session you will learn how to recognize and address common cardiovascular, endocrine, and neurologic presentations seen in everyday practice, and how to develop rational diagnostic and therapeutic treatment plans.


Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course. To learn more about the requirements for earning a CE certificate, please refer to Receiving Your CE Credit and Course Completion Certificate.

Course Materials: Course materials will be available in the course library prior to each Real Time Session.

    3. Veterinarians will only receive credit for those VSPN CE courses that specify in the Accreditation statement that the course is accredited for veterinarians.
