Course Information:
Despite proteinuria being a commonly identified problem in dogs and cats, it may be difficult to manage. Knowing what diagnostics should be performed and when to use certain treatments can be confusing. This course will review the causes of proteinuria using real-world examples. A logical approach to proteinuric patients will be presented including discussions and what patients may benefit from a kidney biopsy.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • understand the causes of proteinuria (prerenal, postrenal, and intrinsic renal) as well as the consequence of untreated disease.
  • formulate a rational and patient-oriented diagnostic plan.
  • discuss the drugs used to treat proteinuria (ACE inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, anti-hypertensives, etc.) and when each is best indicated.
  • understand when referral for a kidney biopsy may be necessary.
  • discuss the common types of glomerular disease and their management.
  • discuss the immunosuppressive protocols for the management of immune complex glomerulonephritis.

Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians actively interested in proteinuria.
Accreditation: This course is approved for 2 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-898681)
