Course Information:
Acute diarrhea with or without vomiting is seen regularly in dogs in general and emergency practice and can be frustrating to manage. In this course, specialists in small animal internal medicine and nutrition will discuss medical and nutritional management of acute diarrhea in dogs, focusing on practical tips for these common patients that can be applied in the clinic immediately. Signs that cases require a thorough workup and intensive care will be discussed, in addition to management options, including diet.


Learning Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • understand general causes and pathophysiology of acute diarrhea.
  • identify cases when more intensive care is necessary.
  • discuss useful strategies for medical management of acute diarrhea in dogs.
  • review the nutritional assessment process and how it relates to acute diarrhea in dogs, including nutritional history.
  • discuss strategies for nutritional management of acute diarrhea in dogs, including diet, fiber, and supplements.


Level and Prerequisites: This basic VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians interested in medical and nutritional management of acute diarrhea in dogs.
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 2 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-1194564)


Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session September 23, 2024): Medical and Nutritional Management of Acute Diarrhea in Dogs
In the first half of this session, Dr. Ghormley, a board-certified internal medicine specialist, will discuss medical management for acute diarrhea in dogs, basing treatment decisions on severity and the presence of dehydration or other sequelae. In the second part, Dr. Lenox, a board-certified veterinary nutritionist, will discuss nutritional management of these cases, including diet, fiber, and supplements.
