Course Information:
This course will thoroughly cover immune-mediated thrombocytopenia in dogs and cats, highlighting some of the preliminary findings of the recent ACVIM Consensus Statement on the Diagnosis and Treatment of ITP (which is still in progress). It will provide participants with a systematic approach to patients with ITP regarding their diagnosis and treatment options, while offering information regarding prognosis.


Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • understand the pathophysiology of immune-mediated thrombocytopenia in dogs and cats.
  • understand the diagnostic work up required to make the diagnosis of immune-mediated thrombocytopenia.
  • formulate an appropriate treatment plan for treating both the critical patient with immune-mediated thrombocytopenia in the acute setting, as well as the stable patient long-term.
  • appropriately counsel the clients regarding the prognosis of immune-mediated thrombocytopenia.


Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians interested in immune-mediated thrombocytopenia.
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 2 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-1049182)

Week 1 (Real Time Session September 7, 2023): Immune-Mediated Thrombocytopenia: Diagnosis and Treatment Updates
Presenter: Carrie White, DVM, DACVIM
This course will cover basic pathophysiology of immune-mediated thrombocytopenia, followed by a more in-depth look at diagnosis and treatment of this condition. The information presented will be based on the current available literature, as well as the findings of the ACVIM Consensus Statement on the Diagnosis and Treatment of ITP (which is still in progress, however the findings were presented at ACVIM in 2022).


Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course. To learn more about the requirements for earning a CE certificate, please refer to Receiving Your CE Credit and Course Completion Certificate.
