Course Information:
Hyperthyroidism was first recognized over 30 years ago, yet we still don't know what causes it. Some cats are tricky to identify AND some are very fragile to treat. Hypothyroidism is more common than previously thought. Current understanding regarding the etiology of hyperthyroidism as well as recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of both thyroid conditions will be presented. Additionally, management of cats with comorbidities, (such as chronic kidney disease, cardiac disease, hypertension, or diabetes), to avoid exacerbating one of the comorbidities will be discussed with case studies.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • diagnose hyperthyroidism when laboratory results are confusing.
  • recognize which cats might have occult hypothyroidism.
  • address cats with thyroid comorbidities.

Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians actively interested in hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism in cats.
Accreditation: This course is approved for 2 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-846457)
