Course Information:
Diabetic ketoacidosis is a life-threatening complication in diabetic dogs and cats. To be able to effectively reverse the severe metabolic aberrations that result, it is necessary to identify underlying disease(s) that have triggered DKA and immediately set up a treatment protocol to stabilize the most life-threatening consequences of the DKA. Then, plans must be made for effective monitoring of your interventions. There are expected and predictable findings in DKA, but also unexpected complications that must be quickly identified and responded to. This course will equip you in dealing with the expected and unexpected, in order to create a successful outcome.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • educate owners how to recognize what circumstances can lead to DKA and when their pet needs hospitalization.
  • identify the difference between a 'healthy' ketotic animal and an animal sick with DKA.
  • identify the major metabolic aberrations in DKA.
  • set up the initial treatment protocol in a DKA patient.
  • identify which parameters need to be monitored and how often they should be monitored.
  • identify when an animal is sufficiently recovered to be discharged.
