Course Information:
Veterinary general practitioners commonly evaluate small animal patients with heart disease. While some of these patients will need a referral to see a board-certified veterinary cardiologist, most patients with heart disease can be managed efficiently in the general practice setting. This session will review how to diagnose heart disease with tools that many general practitioners are likely to have in the clinic. We will also discuss the decision-making process involved in starting cardiac drugs in patients without an echocardiogram. We will review the use and importance of physical examination, thoracic radiographs, ECG, and cardiac biomarkers in identifying at-risk patients that may benefit from cardiac drugs. Our goal is to provide you with a better understanding of how to identify patients with heart disease and treat them appropriately.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • use commonly available diagnostics tools at the general practice level to diagnose and stage heart disease.
  • understand the limitations of diagnostics tests.
  • understand how to properly use cardiac drugs and manage most common cardiac diseases in pets.

Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians interested in cardiology in general practice.
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 4.5 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians . (RACE 20-1040886)
