Course Information:
This solutions-focused course has been developed to support members of veterinary teams who wish to positively influence people around them. This may particularly apply to those who are currently in senior/lead positions or those who aspire to move into such roles, however the concepts apply to everyone. It is designed to help individuals lead, manage and motivate their teams effectively, to help them to communicate more successfully and feel confident handling difficult situations. For those watching live, there will be opportunities to ask questions and to interact. At the end of each session there will also be some reflective questions that can be used to build upon the concepts that were discussed and apply them at an individual level.


Learning Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • define effective leadership and understand the associated skills, qualities and behaviors.
  • consider the pitfalls and challenges of leading and of leadership.
  • recognize and consciously choose leadership styles.
  • develop self-awareness in terms of personal values, strengths, challenges and the impact of previous experiences.

  • describe the components of consistently high performing organizations, teams, and individuals.
  • understand the importance of organizational culture and the role of leadership in developing and maintaining practice values.

  • understand how to manage conflict, difficult conversations and constructively deal with challenging behaviors.
  • understand some of the strategies and tools that can be used for effective debriefing and feedback.
  • understand the role of wellbeing and self-care as a foundation for high performing teams.
  • proactively consider and recognize stress in ourselves and others.
  • manage the responsibility for the needs of your team vs your own needs.
  • develop a self-care toolkit including strategies to build resilience.


Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate VIN CE course is open for enrollment to to veterinary teams interested in leadership, human factors and non-technical skills and/or those who would like to develop their ability to positively influence people within their team (this may or may not involve being in a senior/lead/decision-making role).
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 8 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists. (RACE 20-1197230) .


Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session June 5, 2024): Exploring Leadership and Being an Effective Leader
In this introductory session we will explore the concept of leadership, how it is defined, the skills required to lead and consider the challenges and pitfalls that leaders may encounter.
We will consider the attributes of effective leaders, through gaining an understanding of the different leadership styles and through developing an awareness of our personal core values and strengths, how they drive our behavior and impact others


Week 2 (Real Time Session June 12, 2024): The Role of Communication, Empathy and Building Relationships For Effective Leadership
In this second session we will consider the importance of communication in leadership and explore how appropriate assertiveness can be used to contribute to efficiency and reduce misunderstandings in the workplace.
We will also discuss the importance of compassion, empathy and establishing trust as a leader, including how to build relationships and explore the concept of the ‘emotional bank account’.


Week 3 (Real Time Session June 19, 2024): Leadership Logistics, Team Dynamics and Organizational Culture
In session 3 we will explore the concepts of self, time, and task management and how they can be optimized for success. We will also consider the practicalities of being an effective leader including the importance of good decision-making.
There will also be an opportunity to understand the most effective strategies for engaging and motivating teams for optimal performance. We will discuss the attributes of high performing teams and how the culture of an organization may impact performance.


Week 4 (Real Time Session June 26, 2024): Managing Challenging Interactions, Giving High Impact Feedback and Self-Care for Leaders
In this final session we will explore the importance of promoting civility as a leader and consider how conflict can be managed effectively. We will describe how to manage difficult conversations appropriately and how effective debriefing skills can be used in practice. We will also consider the importance of self-evaluation and reflective practice.
We will conclude by exploring how we can help ourselves and colleagues to better manage the potential and perceived stresses associated with today’s world and develop strategies to build resilience through developing a self-care toolkit.

    2. Only VIN and VSPN members can enroll in a VSPN CE course.
    3. Veterinarians will only receive credit for those VSPN CE courses that specify in the Accreditation statement that the course is accredited for veterinarians.
