Course Information:
Whether you are an assistant, a technician, a new grad vet, or a seasoned practitioner – we’ve all seen cats that cause us to groan when they appear on the schedule. There are often tips and tricks to deal with these difficult kitties – as well as the sometimes difficult owners that accompany them! This course is a compilation of ideas, concepts, practical tips, and tricks aimed to help you evaluate your practice and look for ways to improve the experience of working with cats for the entire staff, clients, and of course – the cats themselves.

To earn a certificate of completion the participant must complete all learning modules and score 80% or better on the end-of-course test. Completion of the course will take a minimum of 90 minutes. Participants must complete the participation requirements by April 30, 2025 to be eligible for a certificate.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • Identify some components of a cat-friendly practice.
  • Look at options to improve hospital scheduling and organization.
  • Organizing staff to work with cats.
  • Set up exam rooms and kennels to be the most cat friendly.
  • Consider some “non-traditional” methods and techniques of working with cats.
  • Look at some drugs that might smooth out the bumps in cat visits.
  • Gain confidence in working with landsharks!
  • Walk away with some ideas that can be used immediately to tweak how you practice.


Level and Prerequisites: This basic VIN CE self-study course is open for enrollment to veterinarians interested in improving the experience of working with cats.
This course is open to VIN members only.
Course Approval: This non-interactive course is approved for 1.5 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-1007238)


Course Agenda:

Module 1: Complications of Cat Medicine.
Total Time: 50 minutes
Video: 50 minutes
Description: This module focuses on setting up a feline-friendly practice, whether a feline or mixed practice. It covers how to transport safely, exam room protocol, and pre-visit medication considerations.


Module 2: Dealing with Difficult Cat and Cat Owners.
Total Time: 35 minutes
Video: 35 minutes
Description: This module covers how to handle and develop a plan for aggressive feline patients and the nuances of the feline pet owner. Non-aggressive feline examination and considerations for the hospitalized feline is also discussed.


Module 4: End of Course Test
Total Time: 5 minutes
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

    1. VSPN CE courses are open to veterinary support staff and veterinarians.
    2. Only VIN and VSPN members can enroll in a VSPN CE course.
    3. Veterinarians will only receive credit for those VSPN CE courses that specify in the Accreditation statement that the course is accredited for veterinarians.
  3. Please check the course Level and Prerequisites, Accreditation, and Tuition before enrolling.
