Level and Prerequisites: This advanced course will be open to veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists actively interested in primary lung tumors, thymomas and chemodectomas.

Course Information:
This course will cover primary lung tumors, thymomas, and chemodectomas: their diagnosis, treatment options, and prognosis.

Week 1 (Real Time Session August 12, 2020): Intra-Thoracic Neoplasia
Presenters: Dr. Bernard Séguin, Dr. Craig A Clifford, and Dr. Philip J. Bergman
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
  • Basic understanding regarding primary lungs tumors in regards to:
    • Etiology
    • Tumor types
    • Clinical staging including advanced imaging
    • Diagnosis
    • Treatment (Surgical and Medical)
      • Review the different approaches to a thoracotomy
      • Review for lung lobectomy and discussion of pneumonectomy
      • Tracheobronchial lymph node excision for staging purposes
      • Role of chemotherapy
    • Prognosis
  • Basic understanding of thymoma (canine and feline)
    • Clinical signs
    • Diagnostic workup
    • Treatment:
      • Surgical excision of thymomas
      • Role of Radiation therapy
      • Prognosis

About the Presenters:
Bernard Seguin obtained his DVM from the University of Montreal. He performed a small animal internship at the University of Illinois and completed a Masters of Science and Small Animal Surgery Residency at Washington State University. He then went on to fulfill his Fellowship in Surgical Oncology at Colorado State University. He was on Faculty at the University of California, Davis, and Oregon State University and is currently a Professor of Surgical Oncology at the Flint Animal Cancer Center, Colorado State University. Dr Seguin is an ACVS Founding Fellow of Surgical Oncology. Dr. Seguin has lectured regionally, nationally, and internationally. He is the author of numerous scientific articles and book chapters. He is the co-editor of the textbook Veterinary Surgical Oncology.

Phil Bergman is the Director of Clinical Studies for VCA. He is an adjunct faculty member of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the principal veterinary investigator for the canine melanoma vaccine (Oncept®), which was fully licensed in 2009. Prior to Dr. Bergman joining VCA, he served as the Chief Medical Officer for BrightHeart Veterinary Centers from 2007 to 2011; from 1999 – 2007 he was the head of the Donaldson-Atwood Cancer Center at AMC. After finishing veterinary school from Colorado State in 1990, he was an intern at Kansas State (‘90-‘91) and returned to CSU for his medical oncology residency (‘91-‘94) and then completed a PhD Fellowship in human cancer biology from the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston (‘94-‘99). He was previously Chair of the ACVIM Board of Regents and President of the Veterinary Cancer Society.

Craig Clifford is a medical oncologist and the Director of Clinical Studies for Hope Veterinary Specialists in Malvern PA. Dr. Clifford is a well renowned oncologist who has authored/co-authored over 60 papers and book chapters. He is a frequent lecturer at major veterinary meetings in the USA and internationally. Dr. Clifford has served on multiple committees within VCS, ACVIM, VSSO the Oncology Pathology Working Group. He is an advisory board member to both industry and foundation partners.
