Course Information:
The nutritional needs of senior dogs and cats may differ from those of younger adult animals. This course will briefly discuss nutritional requirements and foods marketed for senior animals with a specific focus on the lesser-known veterinary therapeutic diets (VTDs). Most veterinarians are comfortable making feeding recommendations for VTDs marketed for kidney disease, joint disease, weight loss, or critical care and recovery. But what about those additional foods designed to support ailments we see frequently in our aging pet populations such as dental disease, cognitive dysfunction and brain health, heart disease, or supporting a pet with cancer? Can these foods be safely fed to younger, healthy housemates? At the end of this course, participants should gain knowledge and tools to be familiar with these lesser-known veterinary therapeutic diet categories and feel comfortable discussing their benefits with clients.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • discuss nutritional assessment focusing on senior dogs and cats.
  • understand attributes of lesser-known veterinary therapeutic diet categories.
  • feel comfortable evaluating commercial foods and making patient feeding plans for senior pets.
