Course Information:
Liver disease in dogs and cats can result from a wide array of primary and secondary etiologies, several of which benefit immensely from nutritional intervention. The first half of this course will review hepatic pathophysiology and focus on the nutritional management of canine hepatic diseases, including hepatic encephalopathy and copper storage disease. The second portion of the course will discuss hepatic disease management in cats with a specific emphasis on hepatic lipidosis and an introduction to feeding tubes. Common liver support supplements and medications (SAMe, silymarin/milk thistle, ursodiol) will also be briefly discussed. At the end of this course, participants should gain knowledge and tools to recommend hepatic veterinary therapeutic diets when needed and feel comfortable discussing their specific nutritional strategies with pet owners. Participants should also gain a thorough understanding of feline hepatic lipidosis and nutritional management.

Feeding tubes will be briefly covered associated with the management of feline hepatic lipidosis; if an attendee would like further discussion on feeding tubes and feeding tube management, Dr. Lenox is covering this topic in more detail in July 2023 - NUTR114-0723: Critical Care Nutrition and Assisted Feeding.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • understand formulation differences in veterinary therapeutic hepatic diets compared to those for healthy adult dogs.
  • recognize clinical cases in which a hepatic veterinary therapeutic diet is indicated.
  • feel comfortable evaluating and recommending liver support supplements and medications.
  • understand the risk factors, pathophysiology, and nutritional management of feline hepatic lipidosis.
