Course Information:
In this course, we’ll discuss nutrition for neonatal puppies and kittens with a focus on caring for orphaned or fostered pre-weaning puppies and kittens and on neonatal puppies and kittens with a failure to thrive. Two aspects of nutritional management – diet and feeding management – in addition to monitoring tools are vitally important for the survival for neonates. To increase everyone’s comfort level with these difficult and high-need cases, we’ve combined knowledge from a board-certified veterinary nutritionist and a veterinary technician specialist in nutrition to cover all aspects of caring for neonatal puppies and kittens from a nutrition, feeding management, and husbandry perspective.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • Understand how to care for orphaned or fostered neonatal puppies and kittens and neonates with a failure to thrive
  • Identify causes of neonatal mortality and important monitoring tools for neonates
  • Discuss nutritional management of neonatal puppies and kittens from a diet and feeding management perspective

Accreditation: This course is approved for 2 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists. (RACE 20-953994)
