Course Information:
Dogs and cats with cancer can have unique nutritional needs, depending on their disease state, nutritional assessment, and owner feeding practices. In this course, we will discuss how to assess nutritional status, diet, feeding management, and supplement administration for oncology patients. We will focus on the principles surrounding nutrition for dogs and cats with cancer, and how to use these principles to identify nutritional goals for their patients and key nutrients that should be adjusted in their diet to achieve these goals. At the end of this course, participants should gain knowledge and tools to help select an optimal diet and develop a feeding plan for dogs and cats with cancer.


Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • discuss nutritional assessment focusing on patients with cancer and their unique nutritional goals.
  • review patient demographics and literature on nutrition for oncology patients.
  • review feeding practices of owners of dogs and cats with cancer.
  • understand the principles surrounding nutrition for patients with cancer.
  • identify nutrients of concern for oncology patients.
  • discuss how to select a diet and feeding plan for dogs and cats with cancer.


Level and Prerequisites: This basic VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists interested in nutrition for canine and feline cancer patients.
Accreditation: This course is approved for 2 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists. (RACE 20-921323)
