Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience in your CE course, we request you attend a practice session prior to the first RTS. Times and dates will be listed in your course confirmation email. Expect to spend up to 1 hour at one of the 2-4 practice sessions held prior to the first RTS.

Level and Prerequisites: Participants in this course should be well versed in canine anatomy and physiology; this course is geared toward a veterinarian interested in rehabilitation. This is a basic rehabilitation course; we will also offering an advanced rehabilitation course to follow. This class is a prerequisite to the Advanced Canine Rehabilitation course.
VIN CE course: open to veterinarians and veterinary technicians/VSPN members. This course has been submitted for RACE approval for veterinarians and/or veterinary technicians.

Course Description:
Physical rehabilitation has recently gained acceptance as a useful therapy to improve postoperative outcomes and enhance function in animals with disabilities. This course will give a general overview of assessment and treatment of a dog with an orthopedic dysfunction and present ways to begin incorporating rehabilitation into your practice, with minimal investment.

This 2-week course is open to all veterinarians and technicians with an interest in rehabilitation.

This course consists of two (2) 2 hour Real Time Sessions; library materials supplementing recommend reading; interactive message board discussions; and a mandatory end of course test (80% score needed) designed to enhance course effectiveness and material retention.

Required textbook: Recommended textbook: About the Instructor: Dr. Davidson is a veterinary surgeon who first became interested in physical rehabilitation to improve the postoperative care of her surgical cases. She has taken certification courses in veterinary acupuncture, chiropractic, and canine and equine rehabilitation. She is a clinical professor in surgery at Texas A&M University, and directs the physical rehabilitation program there.

Week 1: (Real Time Session December 4): Assessment of an animal for rehabilitation Required reading: None
Content: Review the potential benefits of rehabilitation, explain the importance of a thorough history, describe how to assess body composition, muscle mass, gait, joint function and pain, using objective measurements when possible and create a problem list and goals for designing a rehabilitation plan.

Week 2: (Real Time Session December 11): Application of rehabilitation to clinical problems
Required reading: None
Content: Discuss the indications of cold therapy, heat therapy, massage, PROM, and stretching, and describe various types of therapeutic exercises.

CE CREDITS: 4

Tuition: $80 ($72 early bird special if enrolled by November 20, 2011).

  1. Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
