Course Information:
During this course, we will delve into both established and emerging tick-borne diseases. We will examine North American ticks that serve as vectors for tick-borne diseases affecting companion animals and humans. Our discussion will extend to the migration of these ticks and the diseases they carry into new regions. Additionally, we will address the prevalence of tick-borne diseases in the United States, exploring symptoms, diagnostics, and treatment options for tick-borne diseases in companion animals. Specific diseases include Cytauxzoonosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Lyme disease, and Ehrlichia. We will also touch upon emerging tick-borne diseases and the flea-borne disease, Murine Typhus, which is spreading in parts of Texas and California.


Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • recognize the prevalent tick species found in North America and their associated diseases.
  • understand the geographical spread of ticks and tick-borne diseases across the United States.
  • identify the symptoms, diagnostic procedures, and treatment options for tick-borne diseases affecting both feline and canine companions in the U.S..
  • stay informed about emerging tick-borne diseases and their potential impact on animal and human health.


Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians interested in ticks and tick-borne diseases.
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 4 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-1119406)


Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session March 13, 2024): Review of Tick-Borne Disease
The first session will review the geography and prevalence of tick-borne diseases in North America, the pathophysiology of associated diseases, and diagnostic procedures. It will also focus on treatment options for feline and canine companion animals.

Week 2 (Real Time Session March 20, 2024): Tick-Borne Disease Emerging Data and Flea Typhus
The second session will complete the coverage of around 19 tick-borne diseases, with a focus on Cytauxzoonosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Lyme disease, and Ehrlichia as well as touching on the flea-borne disease, Murine Typhus, which is spreading in parts of Texas and California, and potential impact on animal and human health.
