Course Information:
This course will cover the effects of harmful algal blooms (HABs) on veterinary patients including dogs, cats, livestock, and fish. Participants will gain an understanding of how HABS are formed, the reason we are seeing more HABS, how to diagnose HAB toxicity, prevention, treatment, and mitigation techniques.


Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • identify harmful algal blooms.
  • identify toxins of HABs.
  • understand the clinical signs associated with HAB toxins.
  • understand the best ways to prevent toxic exposure.
  • understand how climate affects HABs.
  • plan mitigation if blooms are present in aquaculture facilities.
  • basic treatment protocols for dogs and cats.
  • understand where to obtain the most relevant information.


Level and Prerequisites: This basic VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians and veterinary support personnel interested in the effects of harmful algal blooms (HABs) on veterinary patients including dogs, cats, livestock, and fish.
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 2.5 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists. (RACE 20-943533)


Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session September 7, 2023): HAB - Ecosystem
This session covers the cause of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in the ecosystem, the effects of HABs on the ecosystem, and how HABs are affected by the enviroment.

Week 2 (Real Time Session September 14,2023): HAB - Domestic Animals
This session will focus on livestock and small animals. We will discuss how recognizing HAB toxicity can influence public health and improve the potential treatment of our patients. We will look closely at the toxins and go over cases that have been in the media. We will look closely at the references that are available for veterinarians.

Week 3 (Real Time Session September 21, 2023): HAB - Fish Disease
This session will focus on fish in aquaculture, lakes, and ponds. We will discuss how to recognize a potential bloom and what testing to do to confirm the bloom. We will look at the recognized diseases caused by harmful algal blooms. We will also discuss the current mitigation techniques and those that are being further researched.
