Course Information:
This course focuses open extending the participants’ knowledge of feline medicine, covering a variety of topics including diabetes with the focus on SGLT2i, febrile cats, dermatology cases, acute kidney injury, transfusion medicine, and nonregenerative anemia.


Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • Feline Diabetes: The latest thoughts on treatment and monitoring
    • explain how to treat and monitor feline diabetics.
    • understand and use new class of oral hypoglycemics.
  • Febrile Cats
    • diagnose and discuss therapeutic steps for treating febrile cats.
  • Beyond Depo-medrol
    • diagnose and prescribe treatment for the itchy cat.
    • discuss strategies for better outcomes of pruritic felines.
  • Acute Kidney Injury
    • recognize the early signs of acute kidney injury.
    • develop and modify a fluid therapy plan.
    • monitor patients and treat complications.
  • Transfusion Medicine
    • discuss indications for different blood products.
    • discuss safe transfusion practices.
    • discuss potential transfusion reactions.
  • Red Alert: The Approach to Nonregenerative Anemia
    • characterize and differentiate nonregenerative anemia from regenerative anemia.
    • distinguish between the various causes of nonregenerative anemia.
    • formulate appropriate treatment protocols for nonregenerative anemia.


Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians interested in extending their knowledge of feline medicine.
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 12 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-1025508)


Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session July 25, 2023): Feline Diabetes: The latest thoughts on treatment and monitoring
Presenters: Ellen Behrend, VMD, PhD, DACVIM
This session will cover the latest thoughts on how to treat and monitor feline diabetics. The new class of oral hypoglycemics available for cats, SGLT2 inhibitors, will be discussed in detail.


Week 2 (Real Time Session August 1, 2023): Frustrating Febrile Felines
Presenters: Thomas Hansen, DVM, DABVP
The febrile cat can present a unique diagnostic challenge, especially when no other symptoms are present to guide, diagnostics and even moreso when the minimum database is normal! This session will provide an overview of two broad categories that can lead to an elevated body temperature, then break these down into differential groups. We will then consider optimal diagnostic and therapeutic steps that can be applied to the individual case.


Week 3 (Real Time Session August 8, 2023): Beyond Depo-medrol
Presenters: Mitch Song, DVM, DACVD(Dermatology)
This session will focus on the diagnosis and treatment of the itchy cat as well as new strategies for better outcomes of purrrrritic felines.


Week 4 (Real Time Session August 15, 2023): Acute Kidney Injury in the Cat
Presenters: Rebecca McQuitty, DVM, DACVECC
This session will cover early recognition and treatment of acute kidney injury. We will discuss how to develop and modify a fluid therapy plan, patient monitoring, and treatment of complications.


Week 5 (Real Time Session August 22, 2023): Feline Transfusion Medicine
Presenters: Rebecca McQuitty, DVM, DACVECC
This session will review indications for different blood products, feline blood types, safe transfusion practices for cats, and potential transfusion reactions.


Week 6 (Real Time Session August 29, 2023): Red Alert: The Approach to Nonregenertive Anemia
Presenters: Julie Allen, BVMS, MS, MRCVS, DECVS, DACVSMR
This lecture will provide information on how to classify an anemia as nonregenerative, characterize it further, elucidate the possible underlying cause(s) and highlight potential treatment options. Overall, this session should help you not pale quite as much when dealing with anemic cats!
