About the Instructors:
The instructors for this course reflect a topic-specific expertise and were assembled for their
ability to teach discipline-specific content in relationship to clinical cases.
- Karri Meleo, DVM, DACVIM, DACVR
- Robert M. Gogal Jr., DVM
- Tony Johnson is a 1996 Washington State University grad and
obtained board certification in the specialty of emergency medicine and critical care in 2003.
He is currently a clinical assistant professor at Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine
and a consultant and editor for the Veterinary Information Network.
He has lectured for several international veterinary conferences and is an active blogger a
nd writer. He used to live in a converted one-room schoolhouse in the middle of a cornfield,
but has since taken up occupancy in a normal house in a normal neighborhood with very little corn.
He has 2 young sons and a beautiful wife named Gretchen, who is also a veterinary emergency
and critical care specialist and VIN consultant.
- Sharon Gwaltney-Brant received her DVM from North Carolina State University
in 1985, her PhD from Kansas State University in 1993 and completed a residency in anatomic
pathology at Kansas State University. Dr. Gwaltney-Brant is a pharmacology/toxicology
diplomate of the ABT and the ABVT. Dr. Gwaltney-Brant is currently at the University
of Illinois and is a VIN consultant.
- Lauren Trepanier graduated with distinction from Cornell University in 1986.
She completed an internship and residency in small animal internal medicine at the
Animal Medical Center in New York, then obtained a PhD in Pharmacology at Cornell in 1997.
She is a Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School
of Veterinary Medicine, where she manages internal medicine referral cases;
trains students, interns, and residents; and conducts research on the metabolic basis
of adverse drug reactions. She has received both the Pfizer Award for Research Excellence
and the Pfizer Distinguished Teacher Award at UW-Madison. Dr. Trepanier is board certified
in Internal Medicine and Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology.
- Katrina Mealey earned her DVM from Colorado State University in 1990.
After completing a small animal internship at the University of Minnesota, she continued
her training at Texas A&M University where she completed two residencies, one in small
animal internal medicine and the other in veterinary clinical pharmacology.
She also received a PhD in pharmacology from Texas A&M University.
Dr. Mealey currently holds the Ott Endowed Chair and Professorship at Washington State
University and is the Director of the Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology Laboratory.
Her research focuses on the pharmacogenetics of drug transporters in companion animals.
- Margret Casal graduated from the School of Veterinary Medicine,
University of Z�rich in Switzerland and obtained her Master's equivalent from the
University of Bern, Switzerland in the field of virology. After having spent 4 years
in small animal reproduction at the University of Z�rich, her special interest in
veterinary pediatrics and genetics brought her to the School of Veterinary Medicine
at the University of Pennsylvania, where she completed a residency in veterinary
medical genetics, pediatrics, and reproduction. She remained at the University of
Pennsylvania to complete a PhD program in the field of pathology of genetic disease
and gene therapy as a novel therapeutic option. During this time she also became
board certified through the European College of Animal Reproduction. Since completing
her graduate studies, she has remained at the University of Pennsylvania as a
faculty member and is currently associate professor of medical genetics, reproduction
and pediatrics. Dr. Casal has a special spot in her heart for cats of all sizes
and ages but has a special clinical interest in pediatric kittens.

- Julie A. Churchill, DVM, PhD, DACVN
- Eric Snook graduated from Iowa State University College of Veterinary
Medicine in 2002.
He completed a residency in anatomic pathology at LSU in 2009.
He is currently working toward completion of his PhD at the Tulane National Primate
Research Center.
