Course Information:
This course will cover various aspects of a veterinary emergency response to natural and man-made disasters as well as animal technical rescue response and training for first responders. The course will break out into some of the specifics of team composition and capabilities, a discussion of response amidst a worldwide pandemic, and a discussion of response to Ft. Myers following Hurricane Ian.


Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • gain an understanding of the components of an animal emergency response team and how they align.
  • gain an understanding of how and why veterinary colleges and veterinary colleges are key to animal response.
  • identify key equipment, communication, and interplay within and outside the team.
  • gain awareness of types of emergencies and responses.
  • identify available training for veterinarians, veterinary students, and first responders.
  • learn how to connect with local emergency management.
  • gain an understanding of how to prepare as a volunteer responder.
  • gain an understanding of what training exists for veterinarians and veterinary students and how a worldwide pandemic can impact response strategies, housing, and sheltering.
  • learn about a recent deployment post-hurricane Ian, lessons learned, and future opportunities.


Level and Prerequisites: This basic VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians and veterinary support personnel interested in disaster response and preparedness.
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 4 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists . (RACE 20-1001156)

Week 1 (Real Time Session June 8, 2023): Animal Medical Response

Week 2 (Real Time Session June 15, 2023): Animal Technical Rescue (ATR) Training and Response

Week 3 (Real Time Session June 22, 2023): Assessing Preparedness for Natural and Man-made Disasters, Including COVID-19

Week 4 (Real Time Session June 29, 2023): Hurricane Ian Response

    2. Veterinary support staff must be VSPN members in order to enroll in a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.

    1. VSPN CE courses are open to veterinary support staff and veterinarians.
    2. Only VIN and VSPN members can enroll in a VSPN CE course.
    3. Veterinarians will only receive credit for those VSPN CE courses that specify in the Accreditation statement that the course is accredited for veterinarians.
  3. Please check the course Level and Prerequisites, Accreditation, and Tuition before enrolling.
