Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate course will be open to veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists actively interested in hospice and end-of-life care.

Course Information:
This course is designed to help veterinarians and veterinary staff to understand the animal hospice philosophy and how it has become an important part of today's health care system. During Week 1, we will explore support during the final stage of life; to ensure pet patients live as fully and comfortably as possible. Attention will be given to the philosophy of care. Course attendees will learn different service models, various definitions of care, current trends, and what the future holds for animal hospice. In Week 2, the focus will be on euthanasia best practices to elevate how the procedure is delivered and protected. Euthanasia is widely considered the second most common procedure in vet med is due for an upgrade. Week 1 (Real Time Session May 21, 2020): Understanding Animal Hospice

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
  • understand the current definitions of animal hospice
  • understand various service models in practice today
  • recognize what it take to offer hospice care and ways to support caregivers

Week 2 (Real Time Session May 28, 2020): Euthanasia Reimagined
Presenter: Kathleen Cooney, DVM, CHPV, CCFP
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
  • identify opportunities for improvements within their practices/services
  • perform alternative euthanasia techniques
  • provide enhanced euthanasia experiences

About the Presenter:
Kathleen Cooney has been practicing advanced end-of-life care since 2006. She is the founder of the Companion Animal Euthanasia Training Academy (CAETA), Guardian Pet Aquamation and Cooney Animal Hospice Consulting. Dr. Cooney is a past President of the International Association for Animal Hospice and Palliative Care (IAAHPC) and remains active in their organization, including design of their Animal Hospice and Palliative Care Certification Program, launched in 2016. She is well-known for her work in companion animal euthanasia and has authored two books on the subject along with numerous articles and book chapters. Dr. Cooney has collaborated in euthanasia training for the AVMA, AAHA, HABRI, IAAHPC, Fear Free Program, and more. Dr. Cooney is a strong advocate for best practices in all aspects of end-of-life care and speaks nationally and internationally on such topics.
