Course Information:
You, too, can be a pet pig doctor! Whether you have some experience with pet pigs or are just intrigued by them, this course has everything you need to provide them with high-quality care and client education. Basic husbandry and behavior (did you know that more than 90% of pet pigs are re-homed, primarily due to behavior?), enrichment, nutrition, preventative medicine, physical examination, grooming, physical exam, cases of common diseases, the exact sedation and anesthesia doses I use, and step-by-step videos and photos of a spay, castration, and C-section will all be covered. There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion to help ensure your comfort in serving this unusual pet population!

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • describe basic husbandry, nutrition, and environmental considerations to ensure the health of pet pigs.
  • perform a basic physical examination and recognize common disease presentations of pet pigs.
  • perform basic grooming (dental, skin, and foot care) and medical procedures (IV catheterization, fluid therapy, injections, oral medication administration) to pet pigs confidently.
  • implement an anesthetic plan and perform common surgeries (spay, castration, C-section).
  • bridge the communication and education gap with pet pig owners who are unfamiliar with pig care.

Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians interested in pet pig practice.
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 2 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-1127514)

Week 2 (Real Time Session April 1, 2024): Routine Surgery in Pigs
This session will dive into the surgical procedures in serving the pet pig in practice, starting with the spay and castration needs. There will be step-by-step photos, video, and discussion of sutures and patterns used in closure.

Week 3 (Real Time Session April 8, 2024): Surgery in Pigs continued and Cases
The final session will focus on performing a c-section in pigs, general dystocia management and piglet assessment and care. There will be step-by-step photos, video, and discussion of sutures and patterns used in closure.
Although there will be cases discussed throughout the course for topics such as disease, there will be unique cases that don’t fit previous topics discussed that will be covered in the time remaining for this session.
