Course Information:
Horses are living longer than ever due to excellent care and nutrition! However, our senior horses and younger horses may develop Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID) and Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS). The good news is that these diseases can be managed with proper treatment and management. This course will include an overview of PPID and EMS: What is it? How is it diagnosed? What is the treatment? What are some management tips to keep these horses healthy and performing? Cases with horses and donkeys will also be discussed.


Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to:
  • Learn about Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID) in horses
  • Understand methods to diagnose PPID in horses
  • Learn about treatments available for PPID
  • Discuss cases of horses and donkeys with PPID
  • Learn about Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) in horses
  • Understand methods to diagnose EMS in horses
  • Learn about treatments available for EMS
  • Discuss cases of horses with EMS


Level and Prerequisites: This basic VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians interested in equine PPID/EMS.
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 4 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-1036744)


Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session June 20, 2023): Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID) in Horses
Presenter: Amy Bentz, VMD, DACVIM
This session will focus on the pathophysiology of PPID in horses, also known as Cushing’s Disease, and how to understand the methods of diagnosis. It will also focus on treating PPID in horses and what is available. It will also discuss cases of horses and donkeys suffering from PPID.

Week 2 (Real Time Session June 27, 2023): Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS)
Presenter: Amy Bentz, VMD, DACVIM
This session will focus on the pathophysiology of EMS in horses and how to understand the methods of diagnosis. It will also focus on treating EMS in horses and what is available. It will also discuss cases of horses and donkeys suffering from EMS.


Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course. To learn more about the requirements for earning a CE certificate, please refer to Receiving Your CE Credit and Course Completion Certificate.

Course Materials: Course materials will be available in the course library prior to each Real Time Session.

    3. Veterinarians will only receive credit for those VSPN CE courses that specify in the Accreditation statement that the course is accredited for veterinarians.
