Course Information:
The importance of farriery in equine veterinary practice can’t be denied. Furthermore, it is the only aspect of equine veterinary practice the requires input from another profession - the farrier. The veterinarian and farrier are responsible for not only maintaining the health of the equine foot but both professions form an integral part of treating lameness cases through therapeutic farriery. It is essential for equine veterinarians to have a working knowledge of relevant foot anatomy, biomechanics, and an understanding of basic farriery principles. These three aspects of farriery allow the veterinarian to evaluate good foot conformation, access the abnormal forces that cause a foot to distort causing lameness and allows the veterinarian to interact with the farrier when treating foot condition.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • understand functional anatomy as it pertains to farriery.
  • appreciate the relevance of the biomechanical forces placed on the foot.
  • evaluate good foot conformation and how the foot distort.
  • use anatomy, biomechanics, and farriery principles to treat abnormal foot conditions.

Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians interested in the form and function of the equine foot, what is good for foot conformation, and understanding barefoot methodology.
Accreditation: This course is approved for 6 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 2-932808)

Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session October 3, 2022): The Equine Foot
Presenter: Stephen O’Grady, DVM, MRCVS
A brief overview of the anatomy and biomechanics of the equine foot.

Week 2 (Real Time Session October 10, 2022): Foot Conformation
Presenter: Stephen O’Grady, DVM, MRCVS
What constitutes good foot conformation and how do we get there? Guidelines can be used to consider what constitutes good foot conformation and then farriery principles can be used to improve existing conditions.

Week 3 (Real Time Session October 17, 2022): Understanding Barefoot Methodology: Advantages and Limitations
Presenter: Stephen O’Grady, DVM, MRCVS
Whether using barefoot methodology to rehabilitate foot conformation/distortions, transitioning the horse from being shod to barefoot or maintaining a competition horse barefoot… it requires an understanding of the methodology and a different approach to the farriery.
