Course Information:
This course will provide a step-by-step guide to visceral ultrasound in the horse with an emphasis on the equine colic patient. Participants will learn the ins-and-outs of a brief, but complete colic exam to facilitate diagnosis in combination with physical exam and palpation per rectum findings. Also included will be ultrasound of other abdominal viscera and the thorax to identify and characterize abnormalities of the kidneys, liver and both peritoneal and pleural cavities. In addition to learning technique and recognizing normal ultrasonographic anatomy, participants will be challenged with case-based ultrasound presentations.


Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • perform a 9-step abdominal ultrasound for the assessment of a colic patient.
  • recognize normal and abnormal ultrasonographic anatomy of viscera.
  • identify abnormal findings within the equine pleural cavity.


Level and Prerequisites: This basic VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians interested in equine visceral ultrasound.
Accreditation: This course is approved for 2 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-925037)

This session will provide a step-by-step guide to visceral ultrasound in the horse with an emphasis on the equine colic patient.
