Donkeys are fascinating equids, used and abused by society for millennia. You will meet them as much loved companions, being ridden or driven or supporting the economy for millions of people in developing nations. However, does treating one as a vet fill you with anxiety? Can you remember how they differ from horses? Or maybe you never knew that they were. Join this course to learn how to recognize and treat common problems that donkeys suffer from, and how to prevent them from happening in the first place. Your long-eared clients and their caretakers will be impressed! Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
- recognize a dull painful donkey and the importance of preventing and treating hyperlipidemia and colic.
- feel confident to advise on and treat hoof and basic dental conditions in the donkey.
- perform an in-field anesthesia for a routine surgery such as castration.
Accreditation: This course is approved for 3 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists. (RACE 20-800463) Course Agenda: Week 1 (Real Time Session July 19, 2021): Recognition of Common Disease
Recognition of common diseases in donkeys such as hyperlipidemia, colic, colitis as well as understanding pain scoring and preventative care advice. Week 2 (Real Time Session July 26, 2021): Basic Disease Diagnostics
Treatment of basic hoof and dental conditions, preforming in-field castrations and other minor treatment procedures. Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course. - Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
