Course Information:
Goats are becoming popular companion animals in addition to being shown, and used for packing, weed control, meat, fiber, and milk production. Some owners and breeders consider them food/production animals while others think of their goats like a pet dog or cat. Their biology and medicine are very different from small animals and even cattle. This course is designed to help make veterinarians and their staff and team confident in working with goat patients and their owners, regardless of the intended purpose of the goat.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • understand common health procedures such as PE, BCS, foot trimming, GI and external parasite detection and management, tubing, and blood draws.
  • discuss management issues, primarily focused on the companion goats including housing, feeding, environmental issues, medications and vaccines, and withdrawal times.
  • understand that many procedures and diseases can be performed or managed in the "field" or in the "clinic". We will be discussing how to optimize for both these settings when dealing with and treating the following:
    • Dehorning
    • Castrations
    • Skin diseases
    • Pregnancy diagnosis
    • Pregnancy toxemia
    • Infectious diseases (CL, CAE, Johnes, scrapie, etc.)

  • Assess, identify treatment options and understand what goes into management of the following:
    • Fractures and Founder/Laminitis
    • Urolithiasis
    • Bloat
    • Trauma such as dog attacks
    • Neurologic conditions including: polioencephalomalacia, listeria, rabies
