Level and Prerequisites: This basic course is open to veterinarians actively interested in in equine ophthalmology.
VIN CE Course: Open to veterinarians. This course has been submitted for RACE approval for veterinarians.

Course Information:
Define and understand basic ophthalmic terminology, anatomy and physiology of the horse eye; Understand how to perform basic ophthalmic examinations and diagnostic techniques in the horse; Understand basic ophthalmic clinical pharmacology; Diagnose and treat common ophthalmic emergencies; Diagnose and properly treat common ophthalmic orders of horses - including, but not limited to: NOTE: This course includes both an interactive and a non-interactive component. There is a total of 6 interactive live sessions (12 interactive CE hours) and 11 non-interactive videos (7.5 non-interactive CE hours).

    Equine Lens Problems (32 minutes)
    Retina and Optic Nerve Problems in Horses (36 minutes)
    Disease of the Equine Orbit (26 minutes)

Week 1 (Real Time Session September 10, 2018): Eye Examination

    Medical Standards of Care for Equine Eyelid Diseases (32 minutes)
    Nasolacrimal System, Conjunctiva and Third Eyelid of Horses (44 minutes)
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course. Course Materials: Course materials will be available in the course library prior to each Real Time Session.
Required Viewing: The videos listed as required viewing will be available in the course library.

About the Presenter:
Dennis Brooks professor emeritus of ophthalmology at the University of Florida, and a consultant for BrooksEyes, LLC. He has lectured extensively, nationally and internationally, in comparative ophthalmology and glaucoma, and has more than 170 refereed publications. He is a recognized authority on infectious keratitis, melting corneal ulcers, corneal transplantation, and glaucoma of horses.

Total CE Credit: 19.5 CE hours (12 interactive and 7.5 non-interactive)

  1. Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
