Course Information:
This course provides an in-depth exploration of normal feline behavior and the complexities of house soiling. This course will provide an in-depth understanding of normal feline behavior and their contribution to the diagnosis and treatment of house soiling behavior. The course content covers a range of topics, from the fundamentals of feline behavior to the diagnosis and intervention strategies for house soiling issues.


Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • recall key aspects of feline evolution and normal feline behavior.
  • describe the influence of feline communication and social structures on their behavior.
  • Identify signs of stress as the result of different environments.
  • explain the difference between toileting and marking behaviors in cats.
  • differentiate between behavioral and medical causes of house soiling.
  • assess the environmental and social factors contributing to house soiling behaviors.
  • implement behavioral modification strategies to address house soiling.
  • develop comprehensive management plans for feline house soiling,
  • incorporating environmental, behavioral, and medical approaches.
  • critically assess case studies to identify causes and determine the effectiveness of intervention and treatment strategies.


Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians, veterinary technicians/technologists, support staff, and veterinary teams interested in feline behavior and management of house soiling.
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 4 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists. (RACE 20-1136242)

Week 1 (Real Time Session April 15, 2024): Normal Feline Behavior
Presenter: Christine Calder, DVM, DACVB
This session explores the normal behaviors of cats and their unique needs. Feline communication, social behavior, and the role of multimodal enrichment in meeting their basic needs to reduce behavior problems will be discussed.

Week 2 (Real Time Session April 22, 2024): House Soiling in Cats
Presenter: Christine Calder, DVM, DACVB
This session outlines the different diagnoses for house soiling, focusing on differentiating between marking behavior and toileting behavior (inappropriate elimination). It covers both medical and behavioral differentials and discusses comprehensive treatment plans.
