Course Information:
Understanding feline retroviral diseases is important for veterinarians to be able to correctly diagnose these diseases, as well as advise the owners/carers of the patients about the best care options for their cat. Recent research in the behavior of these viruses in cats, as well as the availability of new diagnostic options, mean that the advice provided to owners a few years ago is no longer current. In this course, we will review these new discoveries as well as discuss when to use and how to interpret the newly available diagnostic techniques for feline retroviruses.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • understand the biology and pathogenesis of FeLV, incorporating the latest research.
  • discuss the different FeLV disease stages, according to the most recent classification.
  • correctly choose and interpret the meaning of different FeLV test results and create a further diagnostic/therapeutic plan as needed.
  • develop an understanding of the prognosis of FeLV infected cats, depending on the disease stage.
  • understand the pathogenesis of FIV, incorporating the latest research in the subject.
  • discuss the different FIV disease stages.
  • correctly choose and interpret the meaning of FIV test results.
  • develop an understanding of the disease stages, as well as the best ways to prevent and manage the disease in cats with FIV infection.

Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians interested in feline medicine, general practice, and/or shelter medicine.

Additionally, the current available tests will be described, discussing the pros and cons of the different options and incorporating the interpretation, depending on the different disease stages.

Week 2 (Real Time Session June 9, 2024): FIV - How the latest research affects the way we approach these patients.
In this session, we will discuss the background knowledge about FIV, including the behavior of the virus in that cat, as well as clarifying the different disease stages. The different diagnostic tests available for FIV will be discussed, as well as how external factors such as vaccination affect their reliability to diagnose the disease. Additionally, different therapeutic options will be explained, including their advantages and disadvantages.
