Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session June 5, 2023): Overview of Nonhuman Primates
This session will offer a broad understanding of primates in general that will serve as an important foundation for the following lectures in the course. Primate taxonomy will be used to explore the different species of nonhuman primates. We will rely on the framework of organizing species into 4 main groups (prosimians, new world monkeys, old world monkeys, and apes) to generalize different common traits in those groups but the focus will be on the most common species of nonhuman primates held as pets in the US with greater detail being covered on those species.

Week 2 (Real Time Session June 12, 2023): Nonhuman Primate Nutrition
Inadequate or inappropriate nutrition is one of the most common veterinary issues encountered with pet primates. The session will focus on the basics of general primate nutrition and will cover different feeding challenges and strategies and will also cover the management of obesity and diabetes in nonhuman primates.

Week 3 (Real Time Session July 19, 2023): Common NHP Clinical Issues, Part 1
This session will focus on viral and bacterial infectious diseases in nonhuman primates. Key topics will include diarrheal disease, zoonotic concerns, routine health screening (including TB testing), and vaccinations.

Week 4 (Real Time Session July 26, 2023): Common NHP Clinical Issues, Part 2
This session will focus on parasitic infections and non-infectious illnesses in nonhuman primates. Key non-infectious topics will include trauma, geriatric clinical issues and considerations, obstetric clinical challenges, and heart disease.

**** BREAK July 3, 2023 ****

Week 5 (Real Time Session July 10, 2023): NHP Species Typical Behaviors
Behavior problems are another very common challenge that primate pet owners bring to their veterinarian. To effectively understand problem behaviors, it is important to first have a good understanding of normal primate behaviors. This session will go over normative behavior in primates in general and will also explore common species-typical behaviors in species typically held as pets.

Week 6 (Real Time Session July 17, 2023): NHP Abnormal Behavior & Behavioral Management
This session will describe and go over the typical underlying causes for common abnormal behaviors seen in nonhuman primates. Potential medical and environmental interventions will also be covered.

Week 7 (Real Time Session July 24, 2023): NHP Neonatal Care
This session will cover the details of hand-rearing infant nonhuman primates. Topics will include nutritional support, weaning, and asocial/behavioral support.

Week 8 (Real Time Session July 31, 2023): Handling & Clinical Techniques
This session will cover the technical aspects of working with nonhuman primates including handling, sedation, vascular access sites, and bandaging techniques. And will be followed by a discussion of topics of interest identified by the participants during the course and/or time for final questions.

Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course. To learn more about the requirements for earning a CE certificate, please refer to Receiving Your CE Credit and Course Completion Certificate.
