Course Information:
Many veterinarians struggle with turtle euthanasia. Many have heard of “euthanized” turtles moving after being declared dead, which has led to odd turtle euthanasia practices in an attempt to prevent reanimation. There is abundant literature surrounding turtle physiology/consciousness, yet it hasn’t been applied it to euthanasia practices. This highly referenced yet interesting masterclass will reveal why turtles are so hard to euthanize and put together a protocol that will minimize turtle suffering during the euthanasia process and ensure non-reversible death.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • understand the physiology of pain/suffering.
  • understand the physiology of hypoxia in the turtle brain.
  • describe the various methods of turtle euthanasia, outlining pros and cons of each.

Level and Prerequisites: This basic VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians interested in turtle euthanasia.
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 2 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-1188980)
