Course Information:
This course will cover chelonian general anatomy, physiology, husbandry, and nutrition, general approaches to clinical workups in chelonian patients including clinical pathology and imaging techniques and interpretation. It will provide a general overview of chelonian pathology, disease, and treatment, and will cover chelonian analgesia, anesthesia, and surgery basics.


Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • discuss chelonian general anatomy, physiology, husbandry, and nutrition.
  • understand general approaches to clinical workups in chelonian patients including clinical pathology and imaging techniques and interpretation.
  • understand basic chelonian pathology, disease, and treatment.
  • understand chelonian analgesia, anesthesia, and surgery basics.


Level and Prerequisites: This basic VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians interested in chelonian medicine and surgery.
Credit Approval: This course has been submitted (but not yet approved) for 6 hours of continuing education credit for veterinarians in jurisdictions which recognize RACE approval.


Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session June 29, 2023): Anatomy, Physiology, Husbandry, and Nutrition
This session will cover general anatomy, physiology, husbandry and nutrition of chelonians patients commonly presenting to the general practitioner.

Week 2 (Real Time Session July 6, 2023): Clinical Workups, Clinical Pathology, and Imaging
This session will cover the general approach to the clinical workup of chelonians, then go into more detail about interpretation of clinical pathology and diagnostic imaging.

Week 3 (Real Time Session July 13, 2023): Pathology, Disease, and Treatment
This session will cover common chelonian disease presentations, their pathophysiology, prognosis and treatment options.

Week 4 (Real Time Session July 20, 2023): Analgesia, Anesthesia, and Surgery Basics
This session will cover analgesia, anesthesia and surgery in chelonian patients including pre-femoral approaches and plastronotomy.

    2. Only VIN and VSPN members can enroll in a VSPN CE course.
    3. Veterinarians will only receive credit for those VSPN CE courses that specify in the Accreditation statement that the course is accredited for veterinarians.
