Course Information:
Rabbits are the third most popular mammal in the United States. More and more clients want their rabbits to be treated with the same level of care they have become accustomed to with their dogs and cats. Unfortunately, many general practitioners did not get the opportunity to learn about rabbits in veterinary school.

In this course, we’ll review each organ system and discuss the most common clinical diseases affecting each system. We will use evidence-based medicine to discuss how to properly rank differential diagnoses when presented with a rabbit patient in general practice.


Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • obtain an appropriate history and complete a physical exam.
  • understand clinically relevant anatomy and physiology of pet rabbits.
  • define Rabbit Gastrointestinal Syndrome (RGIS) and know how to treat the most common primary causes.
  • diagnose and treat common ocular diseases in pet rabbits.
  • diagnose and treat common skin diseases in pet rabbits.
  • diagnose and treat rhinitis and otitis media.
  • diagnose and treat common urinary diseases in pet rabbits.
  • diagnose and be aware of treatment options for a thymoma in a pet rabbit.
  • diagnose and treat common dental diseases in pet rabbits.
  • diagnose Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease 2 (RHDV2).
  • understand how to run an effective RHDV2 vaccine clinic.
  • recognize Encephalitozoon cuniculi, the various treatment options, and controversies regarding E. cuniculi.
  • understand the differential diagnoses for seizures in pet rabbits and the most common treatment options.
  • understand how to safely sedate and anesthetize pet rabbits for common procedures.


Level and Prerequisites: This basic VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians interested in the basics of rabbit medicine.
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 8 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-981500)

Week 1 (Real Time Session March 8, 2023): Introduction / Overview of Rabbit Medicine

Week 2 (Real Time Session March 15, 2023): Gastrointestinal Syndrome and Ocular Disease

Week 3 (Real Time Session March 22, 2023): Rabbit Skin and Respiratory Disease

Week 4 (Real Time Session March 29, 2023): Urinary and Neurological Disease / Anesthesia and Surgical Techniques

    2. Only VIN and VSPN members can enroll in a VSPN CE course.
    3. Veterinarians will only receive credit for those VSPN CE courses that specify in the Accreditation statement that the course is accredited for veterinarians.
