This course is designed to give a close look at the honey bee queen. We will cover the physiological differences between the queen bees and other female worker bees, including the processes leading to queen development. We will describe the life-cycle of a healthy queen and identify her role in promoting and maintaining a healthy colony. We will cover how to identify queen-related issues in the hive and how they can best be resolved. Week 1 (Real Time Session April 10, 2019): Queen Biology

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- describe the queen honey bee anatomy.
- explain the life-cycle of the queen.
- identify the major functions of the honey bee queen.
- define the differences between the honey bee queen and the female workers.
- recognize queen related issues in the hive.
- outline methods to deal with problem queens in the hive.

Dr. Meghan Milbrathhas been keeping bees for over 20 years. She runs a beekeeping business in Munith, Michigan, where she keeps over 200 colonies and breeds queen bees. Dr. Milbrath works as an academic specialist at Michigan State University where she specializes in pollinator research and extension. Her academic focus is on transmission dynamics of environmentally acquired infectious diseases. Total CE Credit: 2
