Course Information:
The primary purpose of this course is to provide a basic to intermediate understanding of the principles of care of wildlife. The course will include details on the common syndromes with which North American wildlife patients present to a clinic, the approach to triage, emergency treatment and monitoring of the wildlife patient, the most notable infectious and non-infectious diseases of wildlife, and the public health and legal implications of treating wildlife.


Learning Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • understand the legal implications of treating wildlife and the laws governing care.
  • discuss public health concerns and common zoonoses associated with wildlife.
  • discuss the principles used to triage, apply critical care, or euthanize wildlife patients.
  • list the more common diseases and clinical syndromes of North American birds.
  • discuss appropriate diagnostic testing and treatment for diseases of avian wildlife.
  • explain appropriate husbandry, handling, and physical therapy.
  • list the more common diseases and clinical syndromes of North American mammals.
  • discuss appropriate diagnostic testing and treatment for diseases of mammalian wildlife.
  • explain appropriate husbandry, handling, and preventative care.
  • list the more common diseases and clinical syndromes of North American reptiles/amphibians.
  • discuss appropriate diagnostics and treatment, including wound care and shell repair in Chelonians.
  • describe safe restraint, husbandry, and supportive care of the more common reptilian species.


Level and Prerequisites: This basic VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists interested in wildlife medicine and diseases. Course participants are expected to have some prior knowledge of wildlife medicine.
Credit Approval: This course is RACE approved for 8 hours of continuing education credit for veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists. (RACE 20-1175280)

Week 2 (Real Time Session August 14, 2024): Common Syndromes of North American Birds

Week 3 (Real Time Session August 21, 2024): Common Syndromes of North American Mammals

Week 4 (Real Time Session August 28, 2024): Common Syndromes of North American Reptiles
