Course Information:
This course will cover emergency stabilization, management and analgesia for acute spinal trauma patients, neurological evaluation, diagnostic procedures and prognosis for animals suffering from spinal trauma and best anesthesia practices for those patients requiring advanced diagnostic imaging and/or surgery.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • determine the anatomical location of the lesion(s) in spinal trauma patients.
  • develop a pain control and pain monitoring plan.
  • develop a plan for stabilization and initial therapy.
  • evaluate spinal radiographs of patients with spinal trauma.
  • determine which patients need surgery and which can be treated nonsurgically.
  • estimate prognosis for patients with spinal trauma.

Level and Prerequisites: This basic VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians interested in stabilization and management of acute spinal trauma.
Accreditation: This course is approved for 3 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-936096)

Week 1 (Real Time Session October 26, 2022): ER Stabilization and Analgesia

This session will cover initial evaluation, diagnostics, stabilization, localizing the lesion, and pain management.

Week 2 (Real Time Session November 2, 2022): ): Diagnosis and Treatment
Presenters: William Thomas, DVM, MS, ACVIM Neurology and Rachael Carpenter, DVM
This session covers diagnostic imaging and treatment of spinal trauma.
