Course Information:
Dr. Linklater is a current practicing criticalist, who has published a lot of peer reviewed information on the topic of transfusions. This course will examine various aspects of transfusion medicine, exploring both the newest developments of transfusions in particular scenarios as well as revisiting knowledge advancement in tried-and-true techniques to help save patient lives.


Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to

  • know what is meant when referring to whole blood versus component therapy.
  • understand the controversies regarding component therapy in patients with acute hemorrhage
  • use a common sense approach to apply this to an acutely hemorrhaging patient with the resources available.
  • collect and administer an autologous blood tranfusions.
  • understand the risks in administering ABT to a patient with neoplasia or GI contamination.
  • understand the various platelets products and their availability in veterinary medicine.
  • understand the importance of and know how to perform an assessment of platelet numbers and function in a patient.
  • understand the concept of a viscoelastogram (TEG): how the curve is generated and what this means for the hemorrhaging patient.
  • identify the difference between hypocoagulation and hyperfibrinolysis and how this changes therapy in a patient.


Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians interested in transfusions and coagulation disorders. It is recommended that participants have a solid understanding of transfusion and coagulation.
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 6 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-1075804)


Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session October 3, 2023): Whole Blood vs Component Therapy
In this session we will discuss whole blood versus component therapy, review the controversies regarding component therapy in patients with acute hemorrhage, and discuss how to handle an acutely hemorrhaging patient with the resources available.

Week 2 (Real Time Session October 10, 2023): TEG Guided Transfusion Therapy
This session will cover how to collect and administer autologous blood tranfusions and discuss the risks in administering ABT to a patient with neoplasia or GI contamination.

Week 3 (Real Time Session October 17, 2023): Platelet Transfusions in Trauma: How do I get what I need?
This session will cover the various platelets products and their availability in veterinary medicine, and how to perform an assessment of platelet numbers and function in a patient.

Week 4 (Real Time Session October 24, 2023): Autologous Blood Transfusions: Is it safe?
This session will cover the concept of a viscoelastogram (TEG), how the curve is generated, and what this means for the hemorrhaging patient. We will discuss how to identify the difference between hypocoagulation and hyperfibrinolysis, and how this changes therapy in a patient.
