Course Information:
This course will cover emergency stabilization, management and analgesia for acute head trauma patients, neurological evaluation, diagnostic procedures and prognosis for animals suffering from head trauma injuries and best anesthesia practices for those patients requiring advanced diagnostic imaging and/or surgery.


Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • recognize the signs of traumatic brain injury, prioritize interventions and develop an initial management plan that also addresses concurrent injuries to the patient.
  • assess the degree of neurological injury in patients with traumatic brain injury, determine what further diagnostic procedures and treatment are indicated based on that evaluation and provide a prognosis for recovery.
  • perform pre-anesthetic evaluation, stabilization, anesthetic and analgesic drug selection and anesthetic monitoring principals for patients with head trauma.


Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians interested in assessment, management, and care of acute head trauma.
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 3 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-945255)
