Ultrasound plays an invaluable role in case management from the initial assessment of an emergent patient to further exploration of clinical and laboratory abnormalities. This modality can be somewhat intimidating at first and a learning curve does exist. This course builds on the concepts and content of Ultrasound in the ER/GP Trenches - The Basics. In part 2 of this course, we continue discussion of the abdomen including small organs like adrenal and pancreas. Case examples of common pathology will be used to illustrate strategic use of imaging alongside other diagnostics. And we move out of the abdomen to explore cardiac evaluation. In the final session, learn to collect an image set suitable for telemedicine or to share with colleagues on VIN and elsewhere. We will also discuss some basic technical aspects of image storage and management. Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
- recognize common sonographic abnormalities and develop a strategy to manage further testing in the case.
- understand the limitations of ultrasound and when to consider other modalities.
- perform basic echo planes for cardiac assessment and know how to augment these with color Doppler.
- obtain the most important cardiac views for consultation with a specialist.
- recognize echo changes associated with heart failure.
- evaluate common structural changes in the adrenal glands and understand the importance of adrenal testing.
- know the sonographic changes that accompany pancreatitis and pancreatic neoplasia.
- appreciate some potential uses of ultrasound outside the abdominal cavity.
- discuss considerations for guided tissue sampling in common clinical scenarios.
- develop a strategy to record an exam for telemedicine referral.
- find a solution for keeping your images safely stored and available when you need them.

In this session we will discuss the very common imaging pathologies that you’ll find in general practice and what to do about them. We will also discuss limitations of ultrasound, and when you need to consider other imaging modalities (or surgical intervention) to get a definitive diagnosis. Week 2 (Real Time Session November 17, 2021): Basic Cardiac Evaluation

Learn how to get the “money shots” required for cardiac assessment. We will discuss how to produce an image set that will be appropriate for remote reading. Recognize the cardiac changes that represent CHF and be able to recommend meaningful therapy when indicated. Advanced reading will be available in the course library - please come prepared - we will be moving really fast in this session. Week 3 (Real Time Session December 1, 2021): Ultrasound Everything Else

Learn about sampling with ultrasound-guidance, how to collect an image set that is appropriate for remote reading and more ideas to store, manage, view and report your studies. Don’t take shortcuts; it does not take that much longer to record the full exam. We will show you our proven strategy to make sure you don’t miss lesions. Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course.
