Course Information:
This course is for veterinarians who are interested in building a solid foundation interpreting cardiopulmonary abnormalities in thoracic radiographs of dogs and cats. The course will go over anatomy of the thorax, cardiac interpretation, pulmonary patterns such as interstitial, bronchial and alveolar. By the end of the course, you should be able to understand the normal anatomy of the thorax, by able to recognize interstitial, bronchial, and alveolar patterns and be able to describe these patterns to aid case management.


Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • recognize the different types of interstitial patterns.
  • understand naming conventions to assist with the description of an interstitial pattern.
  • describe interstitial patterns in order to assist with the creation of a diagnostic and therapeutic plan.
  • recognize bronchial and alveolar patterns.
  • describe bronchial and alveolar patterns in order to assist with the creation of a diagnostic and therapeutic plan.
  • understand the utility of several methods of cardiac interpretation.
  • recognize the limitations of cardiac interpretation on radiographs.


Level and Prerequisites: This basic VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians interested in building a solid foundation interpreting cardiopulmonary abnormalities in thoracic radiographs of dogs and cats.
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 7.5 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-953974)


Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session January 15, 2024): Pulmonary Patterns - Interstitial
In this session we will cover different types of interstitial patterns, understanding naming conventions to assist with the description of an interstitial pattern and learn to describe their order to assist with the creation of a diagnostic and therapeutic plan.

Week 2 (Real Time Session January 22, 2024): Pulmonary Patterns - Bronchial
After this session you will be able to recognize bronchial patterns and describe the order to assist with the creation of a diagnostic and therapeutic plan.

Week 3 (Real Time Session January 29, 2024): Pulmonary Patterns - Alveolar
After this session you will be able to recognize alveolar patterns and be able to describe alveolar patterns in order to assist with the creation of a diagnostic and therapeutic plan.

Week 4 (Real Time Session February 5, 2024): Cardiac Interpretation
After this session you will be able to understand the utility of several methods of cardiac interpretation and recognize the limitations of cardiac interpretation on radiographs.

Week 5 (Real Time Session February 12, 2024): Putting It All Together
In this last session we will put together recognizing interstitial, bronchial, and alveolar patterns and recognize the limitations of cardiac interpretation on radiographs.
