Course Information:
Playing the numbers game: Gaining confidence with interpretation of the serum biochemical profile. This course offers veterinarians a unique perspective on chemistry case interpretation from both an internist and a clinical pathologist teaching in tandem. Participants will gain confidence interpreting abnormalities of the serum biochemical profile using real life cases focusing on dogs and cats.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • explain how reference intervals are established in a population.
  • identify patterns of abnormalities on the serum chemistry, CBC, and urinalysis to distinguish between prerenal, renal, and post-renal causes of azotemia.
  • understand causes and significance of sodium and potassium imbalances.
  • understand causes and significance of liver enzyme elevations.
  • understand metabolism of calcium and phosphorus, and interpret significance of PTH and PTHrp values in light of these analytes.
  • understand causes of hypoalbuminemia and hyperglobulinemia (both monoclonal and polyclonal gammopathies).

Level and Prerequisites: This basic VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians interested in interpretation of the serum biochemical profile.
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 10 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-1005640)

Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session September 20, 2023): Introduction and Renal Cases
The process through which reference intervals are established will be explained. Cases will focus on prerenal, renal, and postrenal azotemia, and distinguishing between associated patterns of abnormal findings on bloodwork and urinalysis. Cases of sodium and potassium imbalance will also be discussed.

Week 2 (Real Time Session September 27, 2023): Liver Cases
Cases will focus on abnormalities of the chemistry panel related to liver disease, with an emphasis on liver enzyme elevations. Products of hepatic synthesis including albumin and their relationship with other analytes will be discussed.

Week 3 (Real Time Session October 4, 2023): Calcium and Phosphorus; Electrolytes
Cases will focus on the interrelationship of calcium and phosphorus metabolism and electrolyte abnormalities.

Week 4 (Real Time Session October 11, 2023): Endocrinopathies
Cases will primarily focus on endocrinopathies with an emphasis on associated metabolic derangements of glucose, cholesterol, and triglycerides.

Week 5 (Real Time Session October 18, 2023): Proteins
Cases will focus on hypoalbuminemia and hyperglobulinemia (including monoclonal and polyclonal gammopathies).

Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course. To learn more about the requirements for earning a CE certificate, please refer to Receiving Your CE Credit and Course Completion Certificate.
