Course Information:
This course will cover basic concepts in collection and evaluation of blood smears, how to properly collect and prepare a blood smear, and the basic concepts of in-house hematology analyzers. The course will provide a systematic approach to identifying normal and abnormal findings and discuss how to differentiate between normal and abnormal findings that appear similar. Emphasis will be placed on the clinical significance of findings as they apply to the overall health status of the patient.


Learning Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • understand appropriate specimen collection and handling techniques for blood collections as it relates to CBCs and other hematologic testing.
  • understand general principles pertaining to methodology and potential limitations of in-house hematology analyzers.
  • evaluate platelets on a blood smear, be aware of breed-related differences, and be able to identify abnormalities.
  • utilize a systematic approach to the blood smear and identify normal and abnormal findings specifically related to erythrocytes, including common hemotrophic parasites.
  • utilize a systematic approach to the blood smear and identify normal and abnormal findings specifically related to leukocytes, including common hemotrophic parasites.


Level and Prerequisites: This basic VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians interested in hematology topics.
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 6 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians . (RACE 20-1173898)


Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session September 28, 2024)
After this session you will understand appropriate specimen collection and handling techniques for blood collections as it relates to CBCs and other hematologic testing, and general principles pertaining to methodology and potential limitations of in-house hematology analyzers. You will also be able to evaluate platelets on a blood smear, be aware of breed-related differences, and be able to identify abnormalities.

Week 2 (Real Time Session October 1, 2024)
After this session you will be able to utilize a systematic approach to the blood smear and identify normal and abnormal findings specifically related to erythrocytes, including common hemotrophic parasites.

Week 3 (Real Time Session October 8, 2024)
After this session you will be able to utilize a systematic approach to the blood smear and identify normal and abnormal findings specifically related to leukocytes, including common hemotrophic parasites.
