Course Information:
Otitis externa is always in the top five most common diseases seen in small animal practice. Many of these cases respond to combination topical medications. Others become chronic and difficult to resolve. This course will cover many aspects of otitis externa including normal anatomy, bacterial infections, allergic diseases and diseases of the pinna. This course will not discuss surgery of the ear or otitis media/interna. The information will be presented in a practical format for midlevel small animal practitioners.


Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • discuss basic canine ear anatomy and physiology.
  • discuss the ear microbiome and bacterial ear infections.
  • discuss treatment options for Pseudomonas sp. Otitis infections.
  • discuss how to biopsy the pinna.
  • discuss differential diseases of the pinna.
  • discuss treatment options for recurrent otitis externa.
  • discuss treatment modalities for allergic otitis.
  • discuss aural polyps, their diagnosis and treatment.


Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians interested in advanced knowledge on the diagnosis and treatment of otitis externa.
Accreditation: This course is approved for 4 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-923529)

Week 1 (Real Time Session November 1, 2022): Otitis Externa I
Presenters: Mitchell D. Song, DVM, DACVD (Dermatology)
This session will cover anatomy and physiology of the ear, the otic microbiome and Pseudomonas sp. Otitis infections.

Week 2 (Real Time Session November 8, 2022): Otitis Externa II
Presenters: Mitchell D. Song, DVM, DACVD (Dermatology)
This session will cover diseases of the pinna, and allergic and recurrent otitis externa.
