Course Information:
This new course takes the learner through the developmental stages that shape a dog’s behavior from before birth until they enter the new home. The true definition of socialization is outlined including how to best prepare a puppy for the modern world through the socialization process. Normal and abnormal behaviors are discussed including early intervention and problem solving to reduce escalation of these behaviors. An introduction the benefits of Puppy Kindergarten classes is including along with an explanation of Learning Theory terminology and trainer selection. Finally, cooperative veterinary care, consent, and voluntary start behaviors are introduced with the goal of education and early intervention.

To earn a certificate of completion the participant must complete all learning modules and score 80% or better on the end-of-course test. Completion of the course will take a minimum of 177 minutes. Participants must complete the participation requirements by April 30, 2025 to be eligible for a certificate.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • Outline and define the developmental stages that shape a dogs behavior from before birth until they enter the new home.
  • Define what socialization is and demonstrate the benefits this learning process provides.
  • Outline the benefits of Puppy Kindergarten classes and their benefits on the long-term behavioral health of dogs.
  • Identify normal vs. abnormal canine behaviors and how early intervention and meeting of the dog’s basic needs can reduce behavioral problems in the future.
  • Define basic Learning Theory and the importance of positive reinforcement training.
  • Define Cooperative Veterinary Care and the long-term benefits of husbandry and consent training.


Level and Prerequisites: This basic VIN CE self-study course is open for enrollment to veterinarians and support staff actively interested in learning more about creating the perfect puppy for the modern world. This course is open to VIN and VSPN members only.
Credit Approval: This non-interactive course is approved for 2.5 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists. (RACE 20-1011408)
This course is approved by the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC) and the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers® (CCPDT®)

Enrollment qualifications for Self Study CE:

    2. Veterinary support staff must be VSPN members in order to enroll in a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
  2. VSPN CE Courses:
    1. VSPN CE courses are open to veterinary support staff and veterinarians.
    2. Only VIN and VSPN members can enroll in a VSPN CE course.
    3. Veterinarians will only receive credit for those VSPN CE courses that specify in the Accreditation statement that the course is accredited for veterinarians.
  3. Please check the course Level and Prerequisites, Accreditation, and Tuition before enrolling.
