Course Information:
Get fast, consistent training results for any species whether you are a trainer, veterinary behaviorist, or pet owner. Learn from Dr. Sophia Yin how science and applied behavior analysis can improve your animal training skills while deepening your understanding of animal behavior.

To earn a certificate of completion the participant must complete all learning modules and score 80% or better on the end-of-course test. Completion of the course will take a minimum of 230 minutes. Participants must complete the participation requirements by April 30, 2025 to be eligible for a certificate.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • Understand the principles of learning and apply those techniques for any species.
  • Learn the categories of operant conditioning and how to categorize training correctly.
  • Implement positive and negative reinforcement using rewards.
  • Understand the technical skills of training and the subtleties in techniques.


Level and Prerequisites: This basic VIN CE self-study course is open for enrollment to veterinarians, veterinary technicians/technologists, and veterinary support personnel interested in the foundations and practical applications of the science of animal learning.
This course is open to VIN and VSPN members only.
Credit Approval: This non-interactive course is approved for 4 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists. (RACE 20-931007)
This course is approved by the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC) and the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers® (CCPDT®)

Module 1: What Giraffes, Dogs, and Chickens Have in Common - Training Techniques That Work for All Creatures:

Description: Ninety percent of all animal training, regardless of the species or complexity of the task, relies on a strong understanding of the science of learning. Module 2: Applied Behavior Analysis in Training: From Missile-Guiding Pigeons to Spy Dog

    3. Veterinarians will only receive credit for those VSPN CE courses that specify in the Accreditation statement that the course is accredited for veterinarians.
